The project

Agència d’Estratègia Turística de les Illes Balears (AETIB)

As part of the launch of the first Balearic satellite, Posidònia, promoted by AETIB and led by OpenCosmos, the WDNA Group took on the challenge of developing a predictive model for groundwater resources in the archipelago’s aquifers.
This solution, based on artificial intelligence and satellite data, allows for anticipating aquifer behavior under various scenarios and provides a key strategic tool for sustainable water planning in the Balearic Islands—a resource that is increasingly limited and vulnerable to the impacts of climate change.

Main Areas of Action

  • Predictive modeling of aquifer behavior
  • Integration of satellite, meteorological, and consumption data
  • Artificial intelligence applied to water resources
  • Management of piezometric sensors and field data
  • Generation of outputs for territorial and tourism planning

Technical Development and Innovation

WDNA leads the technical development of the predictive model for groundwater resources, including:

  • Design and training of an artificial neural network capable of forecasting aquifer evolution
  • Integration of satellite imagery, piezometric measurements, and real-time meteorological data
  • Processing of consumption curves obtained through remote meter reading to fine-tune the model
  • Validation of the model and generation of practical outputs to support decision-making in territorial and tourism management

Objectives

  • Develop a reliable predictive model of aquifer behavior in the Balearic Islands.
  • Integrate satellite, meteorological, piezometric, and consumption data into a unified solution.
  • Improve water resource planning capabilities in the face of climate and tourism pressure.
  • Provide valuable technological tools for sustainable water management.
  • Contribute to a more responsible and resilient tourism model through technological innovation.
